In Western culture, and more particularly in my country, France, the apple is a fruit with a deep and complex meaning.
As the forbidden fruit of God in the Bible, Eve, the first woman, bit into it under the influence of the devil, the vile serpent. Angered by this act, the founding father sent Mankind back to earth, thus driving them out of paradise.
The reason for this dismissal? A fruit that carries knowledge and from which God wished to preserve humans.
The woman is therefore, according to the Christian book, at fault for the misfortunes of humanity.
If we have to find a cause to the sulphurous reputation of this fruit, it is in its appearance. The woman, whose apple has the curves, a tender and perfumed flesh, makes her a fruit which knows how to speak about desire and love.
Under the Roman emperors, it was a symbol of immortality, wisdom and supreme power like the golden apple which represented the globe or the sun.
What makes it its strength but also its weakness, because of the weight of its guilt, the apple is the metaphorical fruit of the modern woman. Both beautiful and powerful, she is feared by men who, for fear of her seductive power, want to control her.
In this exhibition, I place the woman at the centre of the Garden of Eden. Both beautiful and powerful, she possesses knowledge, embodying the future of humanity.
I approach a new theme: childhood.
As the father of a 1 year old girl, I wonder in what conditions she will grow up? What place will she have to play in this world, and more particularly as a woman?
More globally, what will be the place of the woman next to the man?
